1to1million pic01Just opening the door on this one.
If your not Buying Selling Domain Names
Come with me as I take a look at whats involved and provide an overview of the best tactics, links and tips.

G’day folks, thought I would take a peek into the world of Buying and Selling Domain Names.
Who knows… Might even snag a Million Dollar Domain Name. :)

Well, its common knowledge that all the best or generic domain names are gone and I doubt that I am going to hear any stories about - How you found yourself buying a single word dot com just sitting around doing nothing, put it on eBay and made your first million.

We all… Should have got into this racket back in 1985… Having said that, many people are still making a full time income out buying and selling domain names. So lets make a last minute dash for the finish line!

Get Creative

People have been getting creative with Dual-Name Dot Coms for a few years and these often make very memorable names. RedBubble.com is a great example and yet its not a site about red bubbles, it’s a wicked place for artists to make some money online and once I heard it I never forgot it.

TIP
“Search for two-name domains using words that a child learns in Pre-School”

Colors and Antonyms (Opposites Pairs: hot/cold) make great first words to combine with a Noun (animal names are memorable).
For Example:

  • RedFrog
  • FatLemon
  • HotCow
  • BoldMonkey

The added benefit here is a domain name that can be used for any niche and it will inspire a sexy logo to boot!

Buying Selling Domain Names

Lets just rewind a bit and ask the question…

Why should someone buy a domain rather than just try and find a new one?
#1 reason has to be that search engines like Google, favor an older domain names when it comes to rankings.
#2 - Domain sellers have spent hours scouring for domain names worth buying and selling, they may have even raised the PageRank by hosting traffic worthy content while they waited for a buyer.

So what do we need to do have a crack at this…

The simple answer is go to your favorite domain registrar - In my case this would be godaddy and namecheap because I can use coupons for a cheaper deal - then find a valuable domain. If I’m confident, put it up for auction on eBay.

Now! If you are serious about giving this a shot you are really going to need some expert guidance.
I’d like you to meet Mark Fulton he runs DotSauce.com - Sizzling Hot Domain Name Articles.
Actually Mark runs over 15 awesome websites and DotSauce is in itself a great example of a memorable dual-name dot com that was only registered in April of 2007… Encouraging!

So how does a professional do it!

Step #1:

Step #2:
As in all things, sticking to a niche is highly recommended!
Check your niche to see how popular it is with Google Trends.

Step #3:
Collect a few available domain names that you are interested in and register in bulk, its cheaper.
Don’t forget to use coupons as well.

Step #4:
Consider adding content via a free blogger or if you decide to pay for hosting, companies like HostGator will give you the ability to host unlimited websites for $10 per month.
You can also purchase Content Generating Software, although I am not a huge fan of this tactic the goal here is to try and raise the PageRank and value of the domain name.

Step #5:

Valuing and pricing your domain names.
If its just a domain name and nothing special keep it under $50 usd.
If you have attempted to predict the future with your domain, hold out until the time is Ripe, Iphone.com was registered in 1995 and was just sold to Apple this year for a whopping $1million+
You might also try a service like PremiumDomain.com to get an idea of what your domain name is worth selling for.

Step #6:
Manage, sort and display your domain portfolio.
Take a look at Mark Fulton’s Domain Portfolio, he uses a great open-source PHP and MySQL based script available HERE.

Step #7:
Now that you have spent your pocket money buying Domain Names, selling them is the next logical step.
Here are a few of Mark’s favorite places for advertising the domain names that he’s is selling

A huge thanks to Mark Fulton for providing us all with a great website to extend your reading further, make sure you drop by DotSauce.com and subscribe to his RSS Feed, most of the links in this article have either come from DotSauce or my own initial research.
Be sure to read Mark’s article “10 Tips for Investing in Domain Names” and check out what he has to report on the latest trends in Buying Selling Domain Names.

I think you’ll have some fun with this one…

Enjoy! and have a great day.
